Last night's murder of an Australian tourist in the popular Kata beach area has created widespread concern over rising crime in Phuket.

Phuketwan reported that a group of 10 Perth travel agents who were inspecting the well-known Katathani resort were walking along the road in evening.

In a bag snatch went wrong the woman was allegedly slashed with a knife along her heart and later died.

There is little doubt this incident should prompt a more immediate action from local government on the issue of declining public safety.

I have lived in Thailand for 18 years. I have never been to Phuket and have no urge to. Been to Pattaya on business during the day. Again, no urge to go there as a tourist. These places are dangerous. Danger from drunken tourists and dangers from opportunistic local thugs. People come here on a week long holiday and think it is beautiful and everyone is friendly. Yes. Friendly if you have money in your pocket. My advise is to stay away from the usual tourist spots and look elsewhere. If you can stand people pointing at you and shouting "farang farang" then it is a lot more interesting. But still be aware of the danger. Like you are aware of the danger in Sydney or Melbourne, for example.

I was in Phuket last year and was assaulted in a bar, had my passport and wallet stolen by a large group of men. The police didn't seem to concerned when i informed them about the incident. I guess police will only do something when it is a little too late, such a shame someone has to die before Thai police actually do something !
