Thailand's national flag carrier has taken a cost cutting and efficiency move by stopping all TG flights into Don Mueang and adopting a one Bangkok airport policy at Suvarnabhumi. Effective from March 29th onwards the announcement has created a large scale debate and remains a politically charged issue.
Currently Suvarnabhumi is handling 40 million passengers and has a capacity for only 5 million more according to published reports. While short term this will not create issues, longer term Suvarnabhumi will need to undergo a significant expansion plan in order to retain its status as a leading regional hub.
Bidding Don Mueang farewell is a mixed emotion with its easier street side access and familiar layout, though certainly times are changing and long term the airport looks to go the way of other Asian legendary points of entry like Hong Kong's Kai Tak. It will be interesting to see the final outcome of the ongoing debate, though this remains an ongoing storyline for now.
