Thailand's Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment's watchdog organization the Pollution Control Department has ranked the country's beaches on a star rating basis.

Only six beaches in the nation were awarded 5 star status with Greater Phuket's Thai Muang on the west coast Andaman sea securing a spot. Also included were four in Krabi province and one in Satun.

Despite its high profile as a world class resort destination most of Phuket's own signature beaches ranked only at 2 or 3 stars. Pollution and high levels of bacteria were noted in Patong, Rawai and Ao Po.

thephuketinsider.com spoke to officials at the Department and obtained a complete list of the results which we are happy to share on request, just drop us an email.

Pollution and bacteria levels high in Rawai beach ? yes as we found out to our detriment...lots of ominous looking pipes jut out into the sea, shrimp farms waste and excrement, no doubt some sewage from other establishments too.

Dear Sir

The Holiday Inn still cleans the beach in front of the resort everyday, we have an employee cleaning the beach and pathways in front of the Holiday Inn Resort Phuket daily. Regretfully the small beach cleaning machine we had broke down and no spare parts are available. The company who built these small beach cleaning machines does not exist any longer.

We still clean the beach in front of our resort.

Kata beach has always been our choice but this weekend was filthy with rubish everywhere dont these resorts etc see that there living is going to go to the dogs for the sake of a small amount of money to keep these beaches clean there is no managment it is just lazyness, what a shame it is too late for patong now but there are still hope for the other beaches before there is to much bad press on line
