The northern part of Phuket is seeing a flurry of activity with temporary structures housing plants and flowers being installed by the roadside in Chengtalay, Surin and on the main airport road. With the upcoming Foreign Ministers Meeting scheduled from the 16th to the 23rd of this month at Laguna Phuket, the local Government looks to be making cosmetic additions with the hopes of improving the island's curb appeal.
While its nice to see the attention to beautify Phuket underway, its unfortunate that the plants and structures have not be installed permanently and there is a lack of longer term planning or priority to address what could be an improved sense of arrival for tourists. For now the roads are bustling with grass cutting activity and roadside potting of plants, though forward planning to stimulate the ailing visitor numbers are taking a back seat to the upcoming 'big event.'
