Press reports estimate as many as 30,000 local residents and tourists linked hands on the resort island destination in a mass action over possible oil exploration near to Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao.

Civic and local government officials have threatened to file charges unless the Administrative Court moves to suspend four licenses currently in place.

The Eastern Seaboard industrial estate of Map Ta Phut saw an action last year which hit a number of projects and caused a stir with foreign investors.

For now oil is a flash point on the heels of growing global concern over BP's Louisiana environmental catastrophe.
