The declaration of a state of emergency announced this afternoon by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva for Bangkok and a few select provinces does not cover Phuket nor any other southern regions. So far there are no reported actions by anti Government protestors on the island though the coming Songkran holiday is being overshadowed by events in the nations capital.

hello I'm supposed to go to Phuket on sunday with my 6 yr old daughter, is it safe to go in thailand right now? we'll not stay in bangkok of course.
thank you

Bill Barnett responds:
There have been no disupuptions in Phuket and all flights both in Phuket and Bangkok are operating as usual. The island is enjoying reasonable occupancies during the current Songkran and Easter holidays and there have been no political events in Phuket. Most travelers continue to pursue their plans to come to the island speaking to those here, they all seem to not see any impact here from the Bangkok situation.

i tend to agree with the lady who raised the comment before about the authorities not being able to protect VIP's how can they protect her family (and strangly her comment has disapeared!) ..my kids are use to seeing photos of thailand with elephants and thai dancers, not police shottings in the street or blood soaked ordnary citizens..I wouldnt risk it YF.. find a safer spot, Australia and the Gold Coast is better ..

Bill Barnett responds:
Thanks for comments always appreciate and indeed the posting is indeed still online, she wrote on the rental story and her comments are on the bottom of that story. Indeed the events of the past few days have raised more then a few concerns and certainly we hope Thailand gets back on track, at the same time without rose colored shades the holiday period in Phuket had not demonstrations nor events as in BKK and while this remains part of Thailand the peace on the island speaks well for the future. That given the Gold Coast is a lovely place to holiday and its always great to have choices out there for all.

I'm supposed to go to Phuket for my honeymoon in 2 weeks! I wonder if it's better to start looking for alternatives...

Bill Barnett responds:
The past few days despite what happened in Bangkok saw no events in Phuket political or otherwise and tourist numbers were high with the Easter weekend and bike week. While personal safety is a key issue, the island has a reputation as a good destination so think its well worth your while to consider making the trip but I do understand appreciate your concern. Get the facts and make an infromed decision is the best way to go.

so we dont expect disruption to the airport ? we should be able to get out latter today ?

Bill Barnett responds:
I was at Phuket airport at 11 am this morning and Thai Airways as well as other airlines confirmed no flight cancellations or delays, but have advised that you call and reconfirm in advance of any flights.
