A groundbreaking ceremony led by Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyno has kicked off the US$805 million dollar expansion of Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta Airport.

Once fully completed by 2014 the upgrades to the three existing passenger terminals and new apron will provide a capacity of 62 million passengers.

Last year the number of travellers rose above 50 million signaling a longer-term issue of capacity. According to the Airport Council International the facility is the fastest growing in the world.

To address this current options are to either build a second airport in Karawang or to add a third runaway and add on an additional 4th terminal.

With air travel continuing to push up in Asia, the quandary of aging airports, which cannot be substantially pushed outwards, is creating a series of infrastructure challenges in most markets.
