Be it called budget or low cost carrier the rise in airlift though new routes offers Phuket residents and visitors some overlooked great escapes for high season. Here's our Top 5 -

1.JAKARTA

One of Asia's best kept secrets with quality hotels, golf courses, shopping and restaurants galore. AirAsia has direct flights from the island to Indonesia's capital.

2.HO CHI MINH CITY

Also remembered as Saigon this is another AirAsia flight away and for those who have yet to visit the culturally exciting yet chaotic city scene, it's a must see.

3.LANGKAWAI

From one island to another, while much is shared in common the destination is stunningly different, with great nature and tasty Malay food. New entry Happy Air now services the resort destination.

4.PENANG

One of the leading Sino - Portuguese examples of culture architectural still intact in Asia. Dining is a treat with offerings of Chinese, Malay, Indian and a number of other regional delicacies on offer. Firefly Airlines is the way to go.

5.PERTH

While this route is flown by Thai Airways and Pacific Blue it's a short 6 ½ hour journey to visit one of Australia's most scenic regions. Wines from the Margaret River have gained recognition around the world and the large expanses of open space are a treat for anyone coming from crowded Asia.
