Ah viewing the recent CNN Go feature titled "Forget Phuket" the story goes on to list out it's hot tips for NexGen which highlights -
Vietnam - Phu Quoc
China - Hainan Island
Vietnam - Ho Tram Strip
Philippines - Marinduque
It's an interesting insight though for frequent travelers it looks like a flawed argument. Hainan or the Hawaii is China is being largely geared for a domestic market though has minor segments from Korea and Russia.
The Ho Tram strip with the mega 1,200 room MGM hotel and casino along with new resorts is aimed mainly at gamblers and is more about taking on Macau and Singapore then beach resorts.
Marinduque is squarely aimed at spinning off business from Boracay, but even what is one of Asia's finest beaches has yet to become a fully geared up destination island.
That leaves Phu Quoc, though access and infrastructure remain in its infancy along with faster growing resort markets in Danang/China Beach and Nha Trang.
Without a doubt Phuket is going to see increased competition in the years ahead, airlift looks to be a key determining factor and more often than not there are other destinations out in 'left field' that may pose even greater potential.
