Thai AirAsia has announced the end of direct flights between Chiang Mai and Singapore as of May 21st.
A new route between the Northern Thai city and Macau will commence the following day.
AirAsia has commented that the new route will reinforce its development of Chiang Mai as another hub with access to the China market.
Some local observers note that the route may also redirect a portion of the current flow of Thai traffic to the border casinos of Laos and Cambodia and offer them the gaming options of Macau.
Though for businesses in Chiang Mai who rely on the direct connection to Singapore the move is hardly good news.
