Despite the recent news of Michael Jackson’s unfortunate demise and ensuring media circus, the world still turns and life in Phuket remains a rollercoaster during low season. With more hotels entering the pipeline and the property market experiencing a sustained downturn, most conversations today talk of treading water and finding where the bottom of the market is. At the same time long haul markets are seeing declines and overseas investment has flown back home to the US and Europe, in Asia domestic and regional tourism is on the rise. Looking at markets such as Hong Kong where the tap of Mainland Chinese has been turned back on and Korea which used a currency devaluation to attract the Japanese market’s clearly the type of tourists we are seeing is in the word’s of Bobby Dylan ‘the times they are a changin’.

Talk to any hotel manager in Phuket and one of the most common crises management actions has been transporting their annual sales and marketing plans for 2009 straight into the garbage bin.
