There remains much anticipation about next year's debut of the luxury Regent hotel in Panwa.

For many the brand remains a mystery. Most hotel industry types recall what was one of the first independent hospitality success stories in Asia. Regent with their flagship Hong Kong hotel on Victoria Harbor (now the InterContinental).

Later a sale to Four Seasons, and merging of the tribes. In a wildly successful acquisition this gained the Canadian hotel operator a foothold into new territory.

With the remnants of the group moving over to Carlson and eventually a sale to Taiwanese organization Formosa International, the Regent name is again on the growth curve.

Entrepreneur Steven Pan stuck a deal of USD56 million which is cheap compared to numbers being bantered about on a potential Aman resorts transaction or New World's purchase of Rosewood.

Phuket is figuring big on Regents radar, so the opening looks set to draw attention both from near and far to the island.
