Reading a recent Fortune Magazine article about a unique model currently being looked at by Detroit, which has seen a shrinking population and resulting increase in urban land in what could be described as ‘de-urbanization'.

Forward thinkers are now putting together a plan, which utilizes empty residential and commercial spaces and converted these to city farms. Focusing on large greenhouses, vertical growing systems long-term sustainability could be brought back with de-development.

Other targeted resources include large-scale solar panels and wind turbines to create industrial levels of alternative energy. With a population that topped over 1.8 million in 1950, the decline has now registered in with just 800,000 at the end of last year.

While sustainability in many cases has taken a back seat during the GFC (global financial crises), in Detroit the innovation is being spurring by economic survival.
