As a result of the mounting concern globally over the safety of nuclear reactors, Thailand's Ministry of Energy has announced plans to suspend plans for five power plants.

Public opinion over radiation leaks continue to be widely covered in the press and the Fukushima disaster has cast the industry in a harsh new light.

The timing could not be worse given the current political upheavals in Syria, Bahrain,Yemen and throughout the Middle East; and war in Libya are seeing oil prices soar.

New calls both in the private and public sector for the development of alternative energy including solar and wind power continue to be studied.

Though for an economy currently in overdrive there looks to be no easy pathway ahead to satisfy increasing power consumption.

How to meet the growing demand for electricity is a difficult challenge. The nuclear debate can be very emotionally charged. Responsibility and accountability are critical. Perhaps we need to consider a plan that calls for the advocates and decision-makers for nuclear power to show the people the sincerity of their commitment and belief in the safety of nuclear technology by: 1) requiring them (with their family) to live within a 12 km radius of the nuclear plant (even after it is decommissioned or as long as fuel rods and other radioactive materials are stored there; 2) in the event of a problem where evacuation is necessary, they and their family would be the LAST to be evacuated; 3) in the event of any release of radioactive matter where water/food contamination occurs, especially in "low levels that should not affect consumption of the water/food, that they and their family (especially young children...and/or their grandchildren) be required to drink and eat samples of water/food that come from the affected areas and are verified to be contaminated by a group of technical experts who are from both sides of the debate...all of this to be held in a public forum with live TV coverage. Surely these steps would go a long way to establishing credibility, responsibility, and accountability for their words and actions.
