The Greater Mekong Sub region has chosen Chiang Mai to be the first green tourist city in a wide reaching initiative.
A grouping of Thailand, China, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam and Cambodia are looking to the northern city to spearhead both environmental and sustainability initiative in order to create a viable model for other destinations to follow.
The long term project is targeting local workshops and wider cooperation in an effort to stem the tide of global warming and the impact of over development.
