Starting January 1st supermarkets and shops were prohibited from providing plastic bags to shoppers in Italy.

The country consumes an estimated 20 billion plastic bags each year.

Local environmental groups claim over Italy accounts for 20% of all plastic bags used in Europe.

From New Year's onward all outlets are allowed to offer only biodegradable bags to consumers.

Excellent Idea! If Italy can do it why can't we in Phuket have something similar to really protect our turtles, diving tourism, and do our contribution. A few cloth bags will easily do the job! And if the Tesco's, 7Eleven's, Big C's Carrefour's, Big One, Supercheap, Tops don't agree- why not discontinue shopping there until they implement a no FREE bag policy- Sapan Hin workers will be grateful to you.
