For those not in the know Spatburgunder is the German word for the increasingly popular Pinot Noir wine variety. While most of the effects of global warming appear to an apocalyptic one of the noticeable offshoots is the changing on agricultural patterns.
Traditionally pinot noir vines did not prosper in the cold German climate but has warming has brought about the heat factor things are rapidly changing. Reading a recent article in the Herald Tribune local growers comments that while the vines could not prosper in the 60's and 70's, since the 80's there has been a noticeable change in the crops and what was once a shallow and light wine is now starting to create a buzz in international wine circles.
Next time someone offers you a Spatburgunder, perhaps make a toast to Al Gore but realize the glazing threat of global warming far outweigh the benefits. Wine perhaps being the exception for the moment.
