Asia's other leading tourist destination island is seeing a reported fifteen cubic meters of cooking oil dumped into Bali's rivers and open spaces each and every week.
According to a story in the Jakarta Post perhaps even more alarming is that a large portion of the oil which is determined to be unfit for human consumption is resold in local markets.
Hence it reappears in homes, hotels and restaurants where it poses serious health hazards.
International NGO Caritas have are spending more than USD1 million on a community based recycling program aimed at conversion of the waste into biofuel.
The knock on effect if that biofuel can be reused by these same tourism establishments for powering vehicle and running generators.
Waste management in Phuket continues to reel in crisis mode and the method of cooking oil recycling could well be adopted here.
